The Chinese Fiddle Erhu 二胡 èrhú, (literally: two-stringed instrument of the barbarians) is a string instrument that has neither frets nor a fingerboard. Precursors of the erhu, which originated in Persia, were already known in China during the Tang Dynasty (618–907). Initially, the erhu was played by non-Chinese peoples in northern China. However, during the Song Dynasty (960–1279) the use of the erhu spread throughout southern China. For this reason the erhu is also known as nanhu 南胡 nánhú (nán South).
The Arched Zither Guzheng 古筝gǔzhēng, (literally: classical zither) is a classical Chinese instrument with a long history. It has 21 strings tuned in a pentatonic scale, a wooden sound box and bridges that can be moved to tune the instrument. The strings are plucked with fingerpicks.
