Eva Schestag is a literary translator from classical and modern Chinese and has translated works including “The Three Kingdoms” by Luo Guanzhong (S. Fischer 2017), “Manifesto without Borders” by Ai Weiwei (Kursbuch 2019) and “Our Story” by Rao Pingru (Matthes & Seitz Berlin 2023).
The “Fondazione Casa Atelier Bedigliora”, based in Zurich, has awarded her a three-month residency at its home in Ticino. Eva worked there on the translation of the novel “最後的情人” by Can Xue 殘雪. The book will be published by Matthes & Seitz Berlin.
The studio in Ticino allows her to work on this difficult translation in peace and quiet. Eva asked sinokultur whether there was a possibility of supporting her work on the translation during her stay.
Can Xue is one of the most important Chinese avant-garde writers, whose name is regularly mentioned in the run-up to the awarding of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Three of Can Xue's stories translated by Eva were published in 2021 in the magazine “Schreibheft”, and in fall 2024 “Schattenvolk” will be published in her translation by Matthes & Seitz, a volume of 16 stories.
Eva Schestag studied Sinology in Munich, Nanjing, Zurich and Taipei. She taught at the University of Zurich and at Goethe University, at the Departments of Sinology and General and Comparative Literature. After living in China, Taiwan, Switzerland, Hungary and America, she now lives as a freelance translator in Frankfurt am Main. She translates prose, philosophy and poetry from Chinese and English into German and legal texts from German into English.
